Date Night Review: Dance To The Music at The Hawth
With two children under 4, date nights are sadly few and far between in our house. So when the opportunity presented itself to see Dance To The Music at The Hawth on Friday, I was over the moon. I’ve always been a fan of Strictly Come Dancing, and was excited to see what the excellent cast of dancers, including Strictly favourites, Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor, had in store for us.
Dance to the Music is a story of dancing through the decades, starting in the 1920s with a Charleston and taking us right up to the present, showcasing a variety of dance styles, from the ballroom classics of the Waltz and Quickstep to Rock and Roll, Disco and Break Dancing, with a wonderfully chosen selection of songs, sung by the incredible Christopher Maloney (X Factor finalist) and Beth Sherburn, which made you feel like you were being transported to another time.
The cast of eight dancers, including Kristina, Robin and Oksana Platero (who performed with Judge Rinder on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing) were exceptional, putting on high energy performances for the whole two hours. In particular I have to commend Sam Hunter, Shannon Fitzgerald and Pasquale La Rocca for taking over the part of Jonathan Platero (who was unfortunately injured during the opening night of the show) and putting on an admirable performance after 20 hours of rehearsals! A special mention I think has to go to Pasquale for his and Oksana’s truly outstanding Pasodoble in the second act!
Particular highlights of the night for me were the wonderful tributes throughout the night to such greats as Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Prince; Chris’ dodgy dancing during the 70s medley (a great laugh, but maybe stick to the singing!); and some awesome old-skool anthems from the 80s and 90s, which had some of the audience out of their chairs and dancing around!
I would definitely recommend this show to anyone. It was a magical journey of dance through the decades. Outstanding dancing and brilliant songs truly transported you to each era! What a fantastic night!
